THE VISIT OF THE POPE
On the 26th August 1979, in the middle of a blizzard, Pope John Paul II visited Marmolada during his trip in the birthplaces of his predecessor, Pope John Paul I, who was born and brought up in Canale d’Agordo.
On that occasion, the Pope consecrated the statue that today is located in a cave in Punta Rocca station. He was the one to name it “Queen of the Dolomites”.
THE STATUE OF THE HOLY MARY “QUEEN OF THE DOLOMITES”
the statue consecrated by the Pope on the 26th August 1979, outside Punta Rocca station, is today located in a cave, dug in 1980 by the Italian Alpin Troopers of Cadore Brigade.
The statue of the Holy Mary was created by an artist from Belluno Province, Franco Fiabane. The mantle of the statue is extremely peculiar, if we could lay it out, we would see the precise reproduction of Marmolada’s Southern Wall.
